Media Kits: Why You Need One and What To Include

July 8, 2021

Today I am answering some questions about media kits! Some of you are probably thinking “It’s about time!!”

I’ve mentioned a Media Kit a few times in stories and posts and I get weekly messages on what it is, how to get one and if you actually need one. So today I’m going to dive into it a bit. This series will probably be divided up into 3 blogposts because I have a lot to say! Anyone surprised that I have a lot to say? Yeah, me neither.

Let’s get started!

What is a Media Kit?

A Media Kit is a document that tells your clients everything they need to know about you, your blog, brand and business. Traditionally media kits by publishers and brands. For bloggers a media kit is like a resume, a one page document that highlights your blog and your social channels.

What Should I Include?

A Photo of Yourself

Your media kit should include a current photo of yourself. It’s always nice to put a face to the name, it makes for a more personal connection.

An About me/About the Blog Section

This section should only be a few sentences long. This is where you highlight what you and your blog are about. Highlight your mission and goals.

Your Contact Info

This section should be a given but I’ve seen many media kits with no contact info. The brand needs to know how to reach you, add your email to this section and a business number if you have one.

About your Audience

This is where you should highlight a bit about your audience demographics. What percentage in male vs female? What top 3 cities is your audience from? This shouldn’t be a long section, it should just provide a quick look into your demographics.

Partners

In this section I like to include 6-10 brands I’ve worked with in the last 6 months. This is a section that I update 2-3 times a year. As I work with new brands, I add them to this section. I’ve seen this section of a media kit highlighted in several different ways. How I have mine set up is at the bottom of my media kit I have the logos for each brand. It looks professional and I think a logo looks a lot more aesthetic than just a list of brands.

Partnership Opportunities

What can you offer the brand? This section should list what you want to offer them. Reviews, host giveaways, and sponsored posts are some examples of what you could have this section.

Your Stats

This is where you share your social media and blog stats. Numbers aren’t everything but brands want to know how many followers you have and how many people on average are reading your blog posts.

When Should I Use a Media Kit?

Pitching to a Brand

When you send a pitch to a brand, you definitely want to attach your media kit. It makes for an awesome first impression to send a media kit before a brands asks for one. It tells the brand that you mean business and that you’re serious about the partnership.

Responding to Brands

When you get a pitch from a brand, even if they don’t ask for a media kit, go ahead and send one in your reply.

At a Conference

Print your media kit and hand it out to brands that you connect with at a conference! Just remember not to pass your media kit around like a flyer. If you sit down for chat with a brand representative while at a conference, that’s a perfect time to have your media kit printed.

How Do I Design a Media Kit?

I designed my media kit on Photoshop! But if you don’t have Photoshop or don’t feel too comfortable with it yet, you can easily design one on an app like Canva. Keep your media kit clean and organized. Less is more!

Making a media kit can take some work and time but its very worth it because then you’ll have something professional and concise to present to brands.

I hope this blog post helps you feel more comfortable about making your own media kit! I’ll be sharing a media kit part 2 post next week to dive deeper into media kits and to answer more of your questions.

Have a happy Thursday!
