What is Dermaplaning and Is it Good for the Skin?

January 7, 2021

Earlier today I went to the beautiful Aesthetic Med Studio in Springfield, MO and had the most magical, little self care session. It was my first time scheduling a Dermaplaning session and although at first I wasn’t too knowledgeable on it’s benefits, now I’m hooked and can’t wait for my next appointment!

Several of you messaged me on Instagram asking if I could write a blog post sharing my experience, I figured I would start by answering some of the questions I received.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a painless skin treatment that uses a fine, specialized blade to remove dead skin cells and hair from the face.

Does it make the hair on your face grow back thicker?

The fine hair that is removed during this treatment is at surface level, the hair is not removed at the root. Therefore there is no need to worry about hair growing back thicker or darker.

What are its benefits?

  1. Baby smooth skin
  2. Helps discoloration in skin
  3. Fights acne
  4. Minimizes pores
  5. No downtime from procedure
  6. Smoother make-up application
  7. Removes dead skin
  8. Helps diminish fine lines
  9. Brighter skin
  10. Improves how well skin care products work

Can you wear makeup after a treatment?

It’s not necessarily harmful to put on makeup after the treatment but ideally you would let your skin breathe for the rest of the day. I didn’t put anything on my face today after the procedure in an effort to not clog my pores and to just let my face breathe.

How much does it cost & Is it worth it?

Depending on the spa you go to and where you are located, Dermaplaning can cost anywhere between $75 to $200 a session. After experiencing it myself, I think that its 100% worth it. My face looks bright, clean and it feels like it got the fresh start it needed. As women we get our hair, nails, etc done but we often forget the largest organ that needs love too, our skin. It’s an investment but it’s one worth making. Even if you choose to do it once every quarter, it would still make a huge impact on the texture of your skin.

One thing I will say that I was really impressed with is that when you book one of these you are not just booking a facial procedure, you are booking an experience. You change into a robe, the ambiance in the room is very relaxing, there ‘s soft music playing, essential oils fill the air, and so forth. You are paying for a wonderful, relaxing hour of being pampered.

How often should I get one?

This all depends on how your skin operates and how fast your hair grows. Some people go once every 2 weeks (just like maintaining your nails) and some people go once a month. It’s been recommended to me that I go once a month.

What’s the 1st thing you noticed?

I have kept up with a morning and a night skin routine for two years now. This routine has kept my face oils and acne in check but one thing I’ve noticed is that my skin isn’t smooth. I honestly use the word “bumpy” to describe it. As gross as that sounds! The 1st thing I immediately noticed is how soft my skin was and how different the texture of my skin was. There are no bumps at all, just super smooth skin. I even joked after the procedure that they had given me magazine cover skin!

Conclusion

I honestly had such a relaxing experience and I love what it did for my skin. I hope this answers everyone’s questions but if you have more, message me on Instagram (@fashionablyizzy) or comment on this post. Also, if you end up trying this procedure, I would love to know about your experience!
